Built by hand, hidden by trees
The cabin stands in a pocket of old milkwood forest in Van Dyks Bay, a quiet corner of Kleinbaai on the Overberg coast. Steep timber gables, a loft tucked under the beams, and glass doors that fold all the way open onto a deck in the canopy.
Inside it is warmer and larger than you expect. A wood-burning fireplace anchors the living room, the kitchen runs the length of one wall with a reclaimed-timber island, and the whole ground floor opens to the trees. Upstairs, the loft sleeps three more under the rafters.
The grounds are fully enclosed and private. There is a firepit among the milkwoods, an outdoor braai under the trees and an indoor braai for when the weather turns, and a hot tub on the deck. You will not see the ocean through the trees, but on a still night you can hear it — the sea is 200 metres away. The harbour where the shark boats launch is a 700-metre walk by road, or under 500 if you take the shortcuts.

Where you are
Kleinbaai sits at the quiet end of the Whale Coast — the harbour the shark boats leave from, a penguin colony you can walk to, and some of the best land-based whale watching anywhere.

Whales, June to December
Southern right whales come in close to calve, and you do not need a boat to see them. Walk the cliffs and watch the bay — the calm mornings are usually best. The De Kelders cliff paths are especially good; take a flask and your time.

Shark cage diving
The boats launch from Kleinbaai harbour — a 700-metre walk by road, or under 500 if you cut through. Operators run morning and afternoon trips year-round, out towards Dyer Island.

The penguin sanctuary
The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is right on the doorstep — walkable from the cabin, free to enter, open daily 09:00 to 16:00 with feeding at 15:00. A gentle hour, good with children, and a good cause.
