Where you are
Kleinbaai sits at the quiet end of the Whale Coast — the harbour the shark boats leave from, a penguin colony you can walk to, and some of the best land-based whale watching anywhere.
Most of these come from us, not the internet.

Whales, June to December
Southern right whales come in close to calve, and you do not need a boat to see them. Walk the cliffs and watch the bay — the calm mornings are usually best. The De Kelders cliff paths are especially good; take a flask and your time.

Shark cage diving
The boats launch from Kleinbaai harbour, a seven-minute walk from the front door. Operators run morning and afternoon trips year-round, out towards Dyer Island.

The penguin sanctuary
The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is right on the doorstep — walkable from the cabin, free to enter, open daily 09:00 to 16:00 with feeding at 15:00. A gentle hour, good with children, and a good cause.

Klipgat Cave & the coastal trail
About 7 km along the shore from Gansbaai harbour, inside the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. The cave is one of the oldest known human dwelling sites anywhere, lived in during the Stone Age, with a natural stone window onto the sea. Wear closed shoes; there is a little scrambling, and a small conservation fee at the gate.

Danger Point lighthouse
The 1895 lighthouse above the reef where HMS Birkenhead went down, the wreck that gave us "women and children first". The road out runs through low fynbos with the sea on both sides.

Wine & a slow river cruise
The Overberg is quietly one of the Cape's loveliest wine corners. Lomond for the view, Hermanuspietersfontein for the farm roads, Black Oystercatcher near Elim for the drive. Or take your own bottle on the Lady Stanford and drift down the Klein River.

Walks along the shoreline
Footpaths run all along the coast, and it is at its most romantic in the mist with the foghorn sounding over the rocks. Franskraal to Uilenkraalsmond is a lovely one — along Ocean Drive, down onto the beach, and on to the river mouth.
Where we eat
Our honest picks, not a directory. We mostly eat close to home.

The Great White House
Nearest to us, right by the harbour. Fine-dining plates, a good wine list, and an enormous whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling that children adore. A natural stop before or after a boat trip.

Afrikanos
On the way to the Danger Point lighthouse. Great pizzas, good burgers, funky but upmarket, and a proper fireplace.

Gansbaai Bakhuis
The best bread in town, especially the sourdough. Worth a stop for breakfast, or grab a loaf to build a meal around back at the cabin.

Kuslangs
A proper local hangout in Gansbaai. Cheap, cheerful, and probably the best hake and calamari around.

The Blue Goose
More upmarket, genuinely good food, on the pricier side.

Stanford & Napier
Both a short drive, both with a wonderful food culture. Lovely for a long lunch.
When the weather turns
Winters here can be gloriously stormy. Our advice is to lean into it: light the fire, run the hot tub, and soak on the verandah while the rain comes down over the milkwoods. There are board games in the cabin. If you would rather get out, Afrikanos and The Great White House both have good fireplaces, the penguin sanctuary is a cosy hour indoors, and the natural hot springs at Caledon are about 45 minutes away.
Getting here
Two hours from Cape Town on the R43 through Hermanus, or the N2 through Caledon. The last stretch into Van Dyks Bay is a sand road, fine for any car. Full directions come with your confirmation.
